The first step toward earning the CPHR Designation is completing the required foundational courses before writing the National Knowledge Exam (NKE). This coursework requirement was introduced to ensure that NKE candidates have a solid understanding of the CPHR Competency Framework. It ensures national consistency by setting a standard for the educational needs of a CPHR and builds on the credibility of the CPHR designation.

 

Foundational Courses Required:

  • Accounting and Financial Management
  • Human Resources Management
  • Industrial Relations
  • Organizational Behaviour
  • Occupational Health and Safety
  • Recruitment and Selection
  • Strategic Compensation
  • Strategic Human Resources Planning
  • Training and Development

 

The coursework requirement may be met in the following ways:

  • Completion of an accredited program that covers the foundational courses
  • Completion of an HR Degree, Diploma or Certificate that meets the requirements of the foundational courses*
  • Continuing Education with Post-Secondary courses in HR*
  • HR courses already completed within your non-HR post-secondary program*
  • The CPHR Academic Program with Captus Press

*Please check the pre-approved database of Equivalency Lists for Courses and Programs that have been approved.

If your coursework is not in the pre-approved database you would need to apply for a Prior Learning Assessment (PLAR) through Captus Press. CPHR Academic Program (Online)

CPHR Canada, in partnership with Captus Press, launched an academic program with online courses to help members obtain the required foundational coursework. This Academic Program meets the CPHR course requirements for Certification and for writing the National Knowledge Exam (NKE). Taught by leading Canadian HR academics, each course provides extensive multimedia lectures with downloadable PowerPoint slides, progress quizzes, and a discussion board where you will interact with your instructor and other students and post answers to assignments.

Courses can be taken individually as needed. The CPHR Academic Program also includes an Accreditation Option with a National Knowledge Examination Waiver and Prior Learning Assessment for gaining Recognition for courses and programs you have previously taken.

Captus Institute, CPHR Academic Program (effective January 1, 2022) *All provinces, except Quebec, will accept completion of this full Program for the NKE Waiver. Please contact your Provincial CPHR Association to determine your eligibility and confirm the education requirements needed for this accredited option.
