Monique shall present an overview of the various changes that have already come in to effect as of January 1, 2012 regarding CPP, as well as future changes which will be introduced up to 2016.
What’s new?
Here’s an overview of the CPP changes:
Individuals retiring before the age 65 will not have to stop working to begin receiving the CPP retirement pension.
The new Post-Retirement Benefit came into effect on January 1, 2012, which means that:
- If your members are under age 65 and working while receiving their CPP retirement pensions, both the members and their employers will have to make CPP contributions (these contributions will go toward the new Post-Retirement Benefit, which will be added to the members’ CPP retirement pensions).
- If your members are at least 65 but under 70 and working while receiving their CPP retirement pensions, they will make CPP contributions that will go toward the Post-Retirement Benefit unless they elect not to contribute.
The monthly CPP retirement pension amount will increase by a larger percentage if taken after age 65.
The monthly CPP retirement pension amount will decrease by a larger percentage if taken before age 65.
The number of years of low or zero earnings that are automatically dropped from the calculation of the CPP retirement pension will increase.
Note: These changes do not apply to the Quebec Pension Plan.

Occupational Health and Safety obligations, consequences and practical tips

You Could Save a Life One Day
The poem “I Could Have Saved a Life One Day” speaks of a worker who chose to look the other way, rather than speak out about safety – and the workplace death that resulted from that choice.
Occupational health and safety is one of an employer’s most significant legal obligations, and a life or death matter for employees; yet many employers are not sufficiently aware of the scope of their obligations, the impact of failing to meet them, or how to comply with them.
Using real life examples, McInnes Cooper Labour & Employment lawyers Lucie LaBoissonnière and Dominique Fontaine will (1) walk you through the employer’s obligations under occupational health and safety law, (2) outline the consequences of violating that law – both legal and business – and (3) offer practical tips that you can apply in your workplace so that you could, one day, save a life.
