Merv Symes, President of Simplicity Designs Merv Symes has over 30 years’ experience helping organizations to improve. Since his first experience in 1982 as a team member on the redesign of the Grande Prairie People System at Procter and Gamble he has become an avid learner and practitioner of proven Performance Excellence (PE) principles, methods, and tools. He has been part of the migration of Deming’s original 14 principles and Statistical Quality Control (SQC) methods to Total Quality Management to what today is called Performance Excellence. Merv has held positions in Operations Management at Procter and Gamble, Boise Cascade, Domtar, and J.D. Irving, Limited (JDI). His career path led him to Organization Development and HR roles leading the transformation of how JDI companies built leadership capability, engaged employees in improvement, and rewarded contribution. He then served as an internal consultant to JDI’s Leadership on applying PE principles, methods, and tools, and from 2006 to 2013 Merv was Vice President Organizational Change at JDI. Merv dedicates some of his personal time to helping non-profit organizations improve through the application of PE principles, methods, and tools. He is active in teaching the youth of Atlantic Canada through the UNB TME program, UNB Wallace McCain Institute, and 21 INC. Merv is a Professor of Practice at UNB TME and is also the Executive in Residence for the Sobey Business School at Saint Mary’s University. In March of 2013, Merv decided to join his oldest son Matt and start a Performance Excellence company called Symplicity Designs. They are focused on using PE principles, methods, and tools and Web presence to help organizations Design, Live, and Tell their story.
Description: |
||
All organizations have a need to improve, innovate, and/or grow. Most organizations need to do this faster, cheaper and better than they do today. The most important decisions organizations make are those that focus on how to hire, build and align its people. People are motivated when they understand the purpose (why) and are engaged in improving the processes (how). To create a culture of continuous improvement, HR professionals need to understand the principles, methods and tools of Process Improvement to ensure they hire the right people, build the right competencies, and create alignment around the organization’s processes. Excellent organizations apply Process Improvement to improve what they do, to ensure performance excellence leadership competencies and to promote employee engagement.
