An aging workforce means having to think about how workers and organizations address the needs and challenges of older workers, as well as take advantage of the opportunities that aging and an age-diverse workforce can bring to the work environment. NIOSH established the National Center for Productive Aging & Work (NCPAW), hosted by the Office of Total Worker Health®. An important part of the center’s mission is the concept of productive aging, which involves providing a safe and healthy work environment for workers of all ages, and creating conditions that allow workers to function optimally regardless of their age. Workplaces are increasingly adapting to the needs of aging workers, which involves training and interventions that address workplace and task design, flexible schedules, ergonomics, and protections against age discrimination. Through lecture and case studies, this webinar will advance the concept of productive aging and present evidence-based methods for facilitating an age-friendly workplace. The presentation will also offer tools and strategies that encourage a culture of health that facilitates intergenerational collaboration and support. Upon completion of this webinar, the learner will be able to: - Define productive aging and describe how it is relevant to workers of all age groups. - Identify and explain at least three strategies that can be incorporated into the workplace to create a more age-friendly environment - Describe changes in workplace safety and health outcomes that occur as a workforce ages.




Fear-Avoidance Beliefs and Chronic Pain

It has been well-established that patients with chronic pain will often avoid activities that may exacerbate their pain. In the basic fear-avoidance model, if individuals are especially sensitive to the negative experience of pain, this will result in pain-related fear of movement, avoidance of daily activities that may result in pain, as well as hypervigilance or overmonitoring of bodily sensations of potential increase in pain. This fear-avoidance can, in turn, result in physical de-conditioning, depression, as well as disability/avoidance of work, recreation, and/or family activities. Clinical research has clearly revealed that this construct of fear-avoidance is closely associated with increased pain, physical disability, and long-term sick leave in chronic pain patients. Because it is so prevalent in chronic pain patients, psychometrically-sound instruments have been developed to measure fear-avoidance, such as the Fear of Daily Activities Questionnaire (FDAQ), the Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia (TSK), and the more recent Fear-Avoidance Components Scale (FACS). Fortunately, there are now treatment techniques that can successfully reduce fear-avoidance beliefs and behaviors in patients with pain. Understanding Interstitial Cystitis/Bladder Pain Syndrome

Interstitial Cystitis is a condition where people (mostly women) suffer the pain and agony of urinary tract infections without an infectious cause. Researchers now know that Interstitial Cystitis, also known as Bladder Pain Syndrome [IC/BPS], affects about 3% to 4% of Canadian women. There are new Canadian guidelines of which Dr. Curtis Nickel was one of the authors. Dr. Nickel is a lead researcher on IC/BPS, who entered the field because he says that nobody in Canada was doing any research on the condition. He believes that IC/BPS patients are often relegated to the periphery of clinical practice. Dr. Nickel will present a webinar looking at current treatment research options and the most recent research about IC/BPS. As with other CIRPD webinars, a quarter of the presentation time will allow for questions and answers from participants. You will learn: - IC/BPS is more complicated than a simple bladder pain condition - To understand IC/BPS clinical picture, you must look outside the bladder - IC/BPS patients are like snowflakes, superficially they present similarly, but in reality, each patient has a distinct personal clinical phenotype - Management works best when a therapy is based on individualized phenotype specific therapy algorithm

If you are writing the NKE, please note that HRANB is proud to offer our revised CPHR NKE Preparatory Session. This program, developed by the British Columbia Human Resources Management Association is now the official NKE preparatory program provided by five provincial HR associations including HRANB. It has been revised to reflect the new CPHR Competency Framework that became specific to the NKE beginning in 2015. This two-day course is designed to help you consolidate the knowledge you already have and - more importantly - identify where you need to focus additional studying in order to be successful in the National Knowledge Exam. During this interactive workshop, you will receive, review and discuss important HR theory for each competency area. You'll also receive the RPCs, terms, definitions and sample exam questions, which will enable you to identify and rectify knowledge gaps. Please join us for the annual legal update with Lucie LaBoissonnière and Lauren Cicin from McInnes Cooper. We will be doing our format of a half-day session once again. This year, there will be a refresher on workplace investigations. We will address when they should be conducted, what are the hallmarks of a good investigation and other related issues such as procedural fairness, confidentiality, assessing credibility and evidentiary issues.  

In 2017, New Brunswick’s Human Rights Act was amended to include two new prohibited grounds of discrimination: “family status” and “gender identity and expression”. We will address how these amendments might affect the workplace and how HR professionals can be prepared to deal with the duty to accommodate in these types of cases.

The legalization of recreational marijuana scheduled for July 1, 2018 is expected to have some impact on the workplace. We will highlight the potential issues from a health and safety perspective as well as the employer’s duty to accommodate, the scope of drug testing and employees privacy rights.  

Finally, we will be presenting summaries of recent cases of particular interest to members of CPHR New Brunswick, on a wide range of issues related to the workplace, focusing on how they might impact employers. We hope that you will join us.

Employers are increasingly challenged with difficult decisions on how to address issues of substance use in the workplace, including balancing public safety, employee productivity, human rights compliance, and providing effective and appropriate employee support among others. Proposed legislation to legalize cannabis has created an area of uncertainty as employers and employees attempt to discern between medical and recreational use and the impact on fitness for duty.

In response to increased demand from employers, practitioners, and other stakeholders wanting more information on, and knowledge of how to address, substance use affecting the workplace, the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction (CCSA) conducted a broad study to better understand the issue and make recommendations.

This webinar will set the context of substance use and the workplace. The CCSA presenters will then discuss the findings from the study, which included an environmental scan of current policies, national survey, and key informant interviews. The discussion will finish with suggestions on how to apply some of the knowledge gained from the study in the workplace and ways to move forward.

In 2017, New Brunswick’s Human Rights Act was amended to include two new prohibited grounds of discrimination: “family status” and “gender identity and expression”. Does the state of the economy affect the suicide rate?
I’m concerned about my colleague at work…what should I say?
I’m stressed out at work and not sure I can take much more…

Research tells us that there is a direct 0.79% correlation between the unemployment rate and the rate of suicide deaths.  We also know that 70% of all suicide deaths in Canada are among working aged adults (ages 30-64).

The Mental Health Commission of Canada alerts us that businesses in Canada lost $6 billion in productivity costs to due to poor mental health in 2011. The human costs are equally as severe: stress, anxiety, absenteeism, loss of productivity, substance abuse, sick leave, strain on other colleagues, short-term disability and more.

Centre for Suicide Prevention works with corporate and public sector partners to educate and train employees and teams on simple steps for suicide awareness and prevention in the workplace.

Join us for this webinar focusing on the myths and facts of suicide, the costs and impact of suicide, warning signs, and how to respond after the death of a colleague.
