David Brown, Kent Employment Law

A prolific and plain language legal writer, David is the founder of a thought-leading employment law blog that covers timely and novel topics in an accessible and engaging way. He is also a dedicated community contributor, with active memberships in an extensive network of local professional and philanthropic endeavours including Junior Chamber International (Kelowna), Pathways Abilities Society, Kelowna Community Resources and CPHR BC & Yukon and executive positions on the Human Rights and Employment Law Sections of the Canadian Bar Association (BC).

A key component of the Federal Liberal party’s election mandate was the legalization of recreational marijuana. While it is believed that a fully functional legislative and regulatory scheme ending the prohibition of cannabis will not be ready for some time, the prospects of legalized cannabis in the workplace has some companies feeling more than a little dazed and confused. But cannabis, at least in some instances, is already legal and is already in our workplaces. In fact, in 2014 it was estimated that there were 40,000 people in Canada with valid “authorizations to possess” – a number that has been growing rapidly. All of this begs the question: what are the risks and challenges that cannabis presents to the workplace in a changing legislative and cultural landscape?
