Don’t isolate those working in isolation
Companies of all shapes and sizes can have employees who feel isolated, needing more support from employers.
Workplaces, no matter the size or industry, have a key role to play in promoting and supporting the well-being of its employees. But what happens when the workplace is not clearly defined within four office walls or filled with a team? What happens when employees are working on their own in isolation?
The trucking industry, where the boundaries of a typical workplace don’t apply, is one of many sectors that faces such challenges. Typical conditions for transport drivers put them at greater risk of and increased exposure to psychological harm without the proper supports to prevent or address it.
An employee doesn’t have to be trekking across the continent alone to feel isolated. From employees working at home to those stationed in satellite offices, they might need extra support from employers who can mitigate the risks of working in isolation.

Clinicians and exercise professionals need to be aware of the range of symptoms and exercise responses likely to be found in CFS clients, as these help determine exercise prescription for this population group.
It is important to clarify that Dr. Broadbent's research is different than the PACE study. It is not based on "Graded Exercise".
After this webinar, you will be able to:
- Understand the pathophysiology, symptomology, physiological responses to exercise and contraindications for this population group.

Pain-related Distress: Recognition and Appropriate Interventions
DATE: | September 20th 2016 |
12:30 pm to 1:30 pm |
CHAPTER: | Webinar |
LANGUAGE: | English |
Many people who live with chronic pain report that they also suffer from low mood, irritability, and withdrawal from activities and relationships. Although traditionally this was conceptualised as 'depression', new evidence suggest that it is qualitatively different from clinical depression, and not surprisingly, the interventions that have been developed for groups with clinical depression don't seem to be of much help in the context of chronic pain. I will describe this evidence and suggest ways in which clinicians can distinguish between depression and pain-related distress. I will also describe current intervention and propose ways of improving clinical and self-management for people with chronic pain.
In this session, you will learn about:
- The difference between clinical depression and pain-related distress.
- Ways to elicit important information from patients and recognise 'cues' for distress.
- Current interventions, and the evidence about their effectiveness.
- Promising new interventions that might help patients.
Marijuana in the Workplace - What's The Diagnosis?
DATE: | September 21st 2016 |
1:30 pm to 3:00 pm |

LANGUAGE: | English |
Program Summary:
A key component of the Federal Liberal party's election mandate was the legalization of recreational marijuana. While it is believed that a fully functional legislative and regulatory scheme ending the prohibition of cannabis will not be ready for some time, the prospects of legalized cannabis in the workplace has some companies feeling a little dazed and confused.
But cannabis, at least in some instances, is already legal and is already in our workplaces. In fact, in 2014 it was estimated that there were 40,000 people in Canada with valid "authorizations to possess" - a number that has been growing rapidly.
All of this begs the question: How should companies and HR departments respond to this growing trend and the challenges that accompany it?
You Will Learn:
• Distinctions between medical and recreation cannabis use
• Medical cannabis and the duty to accommodate
• Special considerations for places of employment with health and safety concerns
• Considerations for policy development

Total Worker Health: Evaluating the Evidence
DATE: | November 10th 2016 |
3:00 pm to 4:00 pm |
CHAPTER: | Webinar |

Work is an important determinate of health. The work environment directly shapes employee health, safety, and health behaviors. Although employers are typically cognizant of the traditional hazards in the workplace that put workers at risk of injury or illness, they often fail to consider the impact of the work environment or organization on long-term health outcomes or health behaviors.
Programs that expand the traditional focus of occupational safety and health of protecting workers from work-specific safety and health hazards to include the promotion of health and well-being may be more effective than programs addressing these separately. Evidence evaluating these programs will be presented.
After viewing this webinar, you will:
- Learn the role work organization and work environment has on health.
- Be able to describe a Total Worker Health® approach.
- Be provided with a structure for evaluating programs that address worker safety and health while promoting health and wellbeing.

Fear-Avoidance Beliefs and Chronic Pain
DATE: | December 13th 2016 |
3:00 pm to 4:00 pm |
CHAPTER: | Webinar |
LANGUAGE: | English |
It has been well-established that patients with chronic pain will often avoid activities that may exacerbate their pain. In the basic fear-avoidance model, if individuals are especially sensitive to the negative experience of pain, this will result in pain-related fear of movement, avoidance of daily activities that may result in pain, as well as hypervigilance or overmonitoring of bodily sensations of potential increase in pain. This fear-avoidance can, in turn, result in physical de-conditioning, depression, as well as disability/avoidance of work, recreation, and/or family activities.
Clinical research has clearly revealed that this construct of fear-avoidance is closely associated with increased pain, physical disability, and long-term sick leave in chronic pain patients. Because it is so prevalent in chronic pain patients, psychometrically-sound instruments have been developed to measure fear-avoidance, such as the Fear of Daily Activities Questionnaire (FDAQ), the Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia (TSK), and the more recent Fear-Avoidance Components Scale (FACS). Fortunately, there are now treatment techniques that can successfully reduce fear-avoidance beliefs and behaviors in patients with pain.
After viewing this webinar, you will have learned:
- The significance of fear-avoidance beliefs in chronic pain patients
- Methods for measuring fear-avoidance beliefs
- Methods for treating fear-avoidance beliefs in chronic pain patients
